SUMMER ENTERTAINING | Modern Malibu Baby Shower

06.22.17

Nothing is sweeter than celebrating the joy that new life brings! And there is something about the fun, carefree feeling of a summertime soirée that serves as the perfect inspiration to infuse the magic and whimsy into your entertaining. My son, Michael, celebrated his first Father’s Day this year, and it is hard to believe that this time last year I could hardly contain my excitement in anticipation of the arrival of Aphrodite’s and Michael’s first child. So, when it came time to shower my daughter-in law, son and their soon-to-be-born baby girl, Adrianna, I wanted it to be a sweet, colorful, memorable day filled with family, friends, fun…and, of course, pops of color.

The sweet setting & inspiration. My BFF, Brooke was kind enough to host the poolside ladies lunch at her gorgeous Malibu home. In keeping with the color theme of the baby’s nursery, and the hip, modern style of the soon-to-be parents, the shower décor was black and white with pops of bright pink.

The tablescape. To really make those pops of pink, well, “pop,” we had black and white striped tablecloths with black and gold flatware and table settings, black water goblets and gold-rimmed wine glasses. The centerpieces on the tables were mounds of white roses, peonies, hydrangea, dahlias, with bright pink roses tucked in. We incorporated more pops of pink color with the bright napkins, watercolor place cards, and ribbon-tied party favors that added a colorful and feminine touch to the table.

Made in the shade. When setting tables for outdoor entertaining, especially in the summer, it’s important to offer plenty of shade. Instead of a tent, we used lots of black and white striped umbrellas for visual interest and versatility so that we could move them as needed.  Tip: The day before the party, go outside to the location and look at where the sun is shining at the time that everyone will be seated and eating. Since the sun moves throughout the day, this is helpful to see what natural shade is provided and those areas that are in direct light —that way you can plan accordingly and setup on the day of the event can go smoothly.

Get the look! Let this look inspire you and infuse black and white into your outdoor spaces so you have the perfect party-ready place.  Black and white creates the perfect backdrop to add in pops of color for whatever vibe you want to create when entertaining.  There are so many great options from CB2, Z Gallerie, Target, and Frontgate that make recreating this look in your own home as easy as the summer breeze!

The libations. I do love to have colorful libations to match my theme! And, because pink was our “pop of color,” we had a primarily pink bar. With buckets of iced down rosé and pink champagne, and pitchers of pink lemonade and fruit-infused waters, pink was the theme throughout, and it made what could be a boring bar table look downright pretty.

The cake. While guests couldn’t stop talking about how GORGEOUS the mama-to-be was, they also couldn’t stop swooning over the cake. Hansen’s Cakes made a delicious 2-tiered cake, with one tier of coconut cake and one tier of red velvet cake, frosted in fondant-looking – but, thankfully, NOT fondant-tasting – delicious buttercream. It was heaven. So heavenly, a few guests may have even had two pieces…but I’ll never tell.

All in the details.  When it comes to entertaining, you can count on the details to set the tone and carry the vibe throughout making it memorable and special for all of those invited. Coordinating colors and customization are key! Everything from the invitations to the parting party favors were constructed with thoughtful consideration.

Oh, the favors were my favorite thing! Delicious bags of local, gourmet chocolaty popcorn filled carnival-like black and white popcorn containers. And, in keeping with our “pop” theme, we had a beautifully printed guide called “Courteous Tips for ‘Popping In’ To Visit Aphrodite & Baby Adrianna.” A gift that guests can enjoy and one that the parents-to-be can reap the rewards from once the baby arrives and everyone wants to visit.

Best photo opp. I would have to say that the giant balloons were the focal point of all the photo sessions! They were HUGE and colorful and were so symbolic of life, youth and fun!! It was a reminder of all of the joy and celebration we have ahead with this beautiful baby girl!

Moll Must: Rather than going ALL pink or ALL blue or ALL yellow at a baby shower, do what I did, and choose a color-neutral based theme with pops of baby-friendly color! It keeps things looking sophisticated, while still maintaining all of that cuteness and whimsical baby excitement!

What a truly special day it was surrounded by family and friends celebrating baby Adrianna and the parents to be.  Thank you to everyone that has continued to shower such sweet love on this growing family!

FAMILY: Mike & Aphrodite Camello | Moll & Charlie Anderson

Thank you to Mike & Aphrodite for the immense love they share, making this whole magical thing possible.  On August 10, 2016, they welcomed my granddaughter, Adrianna Melina, into the world. What an amazing feeling to see my child holding his child for the first time. Once again, I’ve watched as Aphie and Mike participate in a beautiful dance of partnership, this time as parents, effortlessly slipping into the roles of Mommy and Daddy. They have changed their home by bringing a new and special life into it, transforming their lives for the better, forever. The shining example of strong, selfless love they set for Adrianna is forming the foundation for a beautiful future.

This very new and exciting beginning is what life is all about.
