July 4th is one of my favorite holidays – not only because it’s our nation’s birthday, but also because it’s a chance to joyfully celebrate with those we love! For the past few years, Charlie and I have celebrated the 4th in Malibu, surrounded by family and friends.
The house we’re renting this year sits right on the beach, and nothing feels so quintessentially summertime as waves crashing up against the shore, while fireworks are bursting in the sky. Talk about festive!
When it comes to setting the tone for a 4th fête, I keep it comfortable, classic and colorful. To set the red, white and blue tablescape theme, I selected blue-and-white-striped tablecloths, with navy napkins. For pops of red and white to complement the blue and white table settings, I chose white dahlias, white orchids and red roses. Instead of combining the flower colors, I created all white and all red arrangements in low glass cylinders and added a few flags to the red centerpieces to bring a little American pride to the party.
Speaking of American pride, my guests were all in the American spirit.
My friends and family and I all sported fun Uncle Sam hats, and even the pups were in on the fun, with American flag sweatshirts!
We have been missing barbecue, so to bring the flavor of the South to our 4th celebration, we served barbecue ribs and all the fixings!
As Charlie and I stood out on our deck, watching the fireworks light up the sky, my heart lit up as well, knowing that none of us would ever forget such a magical Malibu night.
